Anomalies is the third book by Swedish photographer Marten Lange and the seventh book from the tiny Farewell Books press.
The simplicity of the photographs work so well with the simplicity of the book materials and the book itself. The photographs, all in square format and high contrast, are well edited and of varying content. Trees, power lines, shower curtains, and an over turned bus are all seen in the book. The one constant seems to be a high powered flash/strobe use to illuminate the subject from an often black background. There is no text in the book, so it really is all about the photographs and this works really well.
Lange's previous books include industrial machinery and high contrast forest shrubbery that is reminiscent of Lee Friedlander's current work.
Self produced books from places like Blurb or books from small, independent presses such as Farewell Books are becoming more and more popular, are relatively easy to have made and offer photographers and artists a way to economically get their work out to the masses. This book is no exception. It is well done and at a cost of $20, you can really go wrong. I highly recommend adding this book to your collection.
